A Simple Guide to Self-Administration
Administering your medication at home is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to ensure your injection is safe, clean, and effective.
1. Clean Your Hands
Always start with a clean environment. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds to minimize the risk of infection.
2. Gather Your Supplies
Place your materials on a clean, flat surface:
Medication (vial and syringe or auto-injector pen)
Alcohol pads
Clean gauze
A sharps container (for safe needle disposal)
Bandages (optional)
3. Prepare the Injection Site
Choose a site that is free of redness, irritation, or bruising. To maintain skin health, rotate your injection site every time you administer a dose. Clean the area with an alcohol pad and let it air dry.
Common Injection Sites:
Abdomen: At or below the belly button level, at least two inches away from the navel.
Thigh: The front or middle-outer section of the thigh.
Upper Arm: The back or side of the arm.
4. Prepare the Medication
Wipe the rubber stopper of the medication vial with a fresh alcohol pad.
Pull back the syringe plunger to draw in an amount of air equal to your dose.
Insert the needle into the stopper, inject the air, and turn the vial upside down.
Slowly pull the plunger to draw the medication into the syringe.
Tap the side of the syringe to move air bubbles to the top, then gently push the plunger to remove them.
5. Administer the Injection
Gently pinch a small fold of skin at your chosen site.
Insert the needle quickly at a 90-degree angle (or 45 degrees if you have very little body fat).
Slowly depress the plunger until the full dose is administered.
Release the skin and remove the needle.
Immediate Disposal: Place the used needle and syringe directly into an FDA-cleared sharps container. If you don't have one, use a heavy-duty plastic container with a secure lid.
6. After-Care
If slight bleeding occurs, press the site gently with gauze.
Apply a bandage if necessary.
